Neighborly actions TODAY, tomorrow, and more
New vaccine appointments, solidarity protest for Daunte Wright, better probation/parole laws, insurance coverage for doula care, Southside/West End neighborhood cleanup, and more
Hi, everyone. There are a lot of things we can do with and for our neighbors this week.
TODAY, 4/12, BY 4pm (to sign up) /TOMORROW, 4pm on (to testify), remotely: RI House Bill 6148 requires people who are on probation to be released on bail or personal recognizance if they incur a new nonviolent charge (right now, RI sends them back to prison automatically in this situation). DARE has put together a quick guide for testifying (including the links you need) and there’s some background here.
TODAY, 4/12, anytime after now, various locations: A number of vaccine appointments in the next couple weeks have opened up by ZIP code and city. In some places the age is lowered to 16+ or 18+ and others to 40+. Please SHARE open spots with others (friends, family, coworkers, employees…) if you’re already vaccinated, & consider whether you are willing to offer someone a ride to their appointment!
Through CF Housing, 18+ in the following ZIP codes: 02860, 02861, 02863, 02904, 02905, 02906, 02907, 02908, 02909, 02895, 02893, 02910, 02920 https://vaccinateri.org/reg/1215917064 and https://vaccinateri.org/reg/7169590421
Through the City of Pawtucket, residents of Pawtucket 18+: https://vaccinateri.org//reg/6151170902 and https://vaccinateri.org//reg/5616829017
Pawtucket and Central Falls residents 16+: https://vaccinateri.org//reg/7265199079, https://vaccinateri.org//reg/5613329097 and https://vaccinateri.org//reg/7962159380
Through the City of Providence, 18+ in ZIP codes 02904, 02905, 02907, 09208, 02909 AND 40+ in ZIP codes 02893, 02906, 02910, 02920, 02911, 02914, and 02919: https://www.vaccinateri.org/reg/1092956603 (copy/paste this link, clicking on them sometimes gives you an error and they keep not fixing it)
If anyone’s friends, family, etc. are showing some doubts or objections, AMOR has put together a clear Q&A sheet in English and Spanish and I’m happy to share it to see if it addresses the doubts or objections you are hearing—just let me know and I’ll email it to you. ALSO: People who speak Hmong, Spanish, Khmer, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Kirundi and more of the languages widely spoke in Providence are very much needed for vaccine outreach and should contact Dr. Luis Daniel Muñoz luisdaniel.munoz85@gmail.com.
TOMORROW, 4/13, BY 4pm (to sign up) / 4/14, 4pm on (to testify), remotely: Getting doulas covered by insurance could reduce medical violence & Black maternal mortality, & increase the chances that babies & parents get off to a good start. (Here’s some background.) RI House Bill 5929, the “doula bill,” which would mandate that coverage, is coming up for a hearing. Please testify if you can and support the health of Rhode Island families from the first breath! Sign up by 4pm TOMORROW here to testify aloud, or send in written testimony anytime after now to HouseFinance@rilegislature.gov. Here’s the hearing agenda. Also, remember that you don’t need to know what you’re going to say in order to sign up to testify aloud—you can sign up and then take a little time to put your testimony together!
4/14, 6pm, RI State House steps: Yesterday, a cop murdered Daunte Green at a traffic stop in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The call for a solidarity protest went out today from Black Lives Matter RI and the PVD Wide Awakes. If I learn further details on this I’ll share them.
Anytime this week, remotely to ask about it, but eventually in person: Enrique Sanchez and Gregory Waksmulski are gauging Southside and West End residents’ interest in being part of a neighborhood cleanup. If you live there and want to walk around picking up trash (I know, I’m making it sound so glamorous! But I genuinely think it will be a fun and cheerful time) you can email Enrique at esanchez_3262@email.ric.edu.
With love,
Kate
