Neighborly Actions: The One About Housing
Where to go if you believe, correctly, that everyone should have someplace to go.
Hi everyone,
We’ll get back to specific actions next week. Also, don’t forget to email dana.heng@gmail.com if you think you could harbor the community fridge.
I put this together for a couple of people I’m working with on climate and community stuff in Warren, where—as in most places in RI—more and more people are struggling to get and stay housed. I thought you all might be able to use it too. If there’s a group where you’re like, “That’s near me,” or, “That sounds like my thing,” but you can’t get involved right now, you could bookmark it and make yourself a note to check back in a month.
Longtime recipients of this list will recognize these groups and may have organized with some of them! You can also forward it to people who are still looking for ways to connect.
Direct Action for Rights and Equality (DARE)'s Tenants and Homeowners Association, been around a long time, focused on anti-gentrification and rent stabilization. Tends to be very keyed into state-level advocacy and policy.

Providence Organization of Workers and Renters. A newer group, focused on tenants' rights, fighting rent hikes, and eviction defense. Doing a lot of base-building right now.

The Milagros Project, which started in Woonsocket, is now striving for food justice statewide, as well as associated things like harm reduction, a free store, and other things that are useful to people who are struggling.

Wide Awakes Collective: Does a lot of direct fundraising and housing searches for people in need; runs a free store/clothing distribution. Worth checking out because they are all community-run, no town or state assistance as far as I know.

Reclaim RI has a few policy campaigns; the relevant one here is the Homes for All legislative package and its components, which are described at that link. Good if you're looking to connect with people doing straight policy work.
