Neighborly actions: do now, do later
The Seaconke Wampanoag tribe seeks state recognition; rent in Providence seeks stabilization; the AMOR grill-off seeks YOU (but in a fun way).
Hi everyone,
Sorry it’s been a few weeks. Kate hurt her back and Mia was on school vacation. We would like to get back to sending these every week if we can.
This week, there’s a chance to sign up to do some cool things in June, plus a couple of things you can do sooner.
TOMORROW, 5/5, or Monday, 5/7: The Seaconke Wampanoag tribe is seeking state recognition, which would acknowledge their history and presence within these lands. You can support them by telling the members of the RI House State Government and Elections Committee, and/or your own RI representative, to vote yes on Bills 5020 (which sets up a process for state tribal recognition) and 5021 (which recognizes the tribe itself). The Rhode Island government currently does not recognize any Indigenous tribes, including the Narragansett Tribe, who have also shaped the history, culture, and landscape of these lands for tens of thousands of years.
TUESDAY, 5/9 (and every Tuesday), 6-8pm, 340 Lockwood St: Join DARE in the ongoing fight for rent stabilization in this city of outrageous housing prices. If you’ve been waiting to get involved with this effort, there’s no better time than now! Dinner provided; call ahead, 401-351-7559, if you’ll need childcare; space is wheelchair/mobility aid accessible. Free legal assistance for housing issues is also available through DARE, every other week—so call to see if this is that kind of week, as well.
STARTING NOW/BY 5/27: AMOR is holding their annual grill-off on 6/10, 11am-3pm, at the John Hope Settlement House (7 Thomas P. Whitten Way, off Westminster St, Providence). We’ll gather to raise money, cook and eat good food, be with people, and learn about more local organizations. Here are some ways you can participate:
Friend groups, families, organizations, businesses: field a grill-off team ($50 to enter, $500 for the winner)!
Businesses and organizations: be a sponsor (different rewards for different prices)! Or donate materials (candy, food, raffle items…)
People with time but no money: volunteer at the event (many roles for many abilities)!
Humans of all types: buy a ticket and attend (some of the tastiest food you’ll eat all summer)!
We’ll have childcare (definitely), live music (probably), and the knowledge that we are helping to keep families together and working toward a world without state violence.
Thanks everyone, and happy spring,
Estefany, Mia and Kate
